Hayden Turner has hosted numerous television programs and series for National Geographic.

These range from several of the much-loved Earth Pulse series to the visually stunning Hayden Turner’s Wildlife Challenge, and the original Video Postcards–Africa series that made him famous, among others. Says Hayden, "Working for National Geographic has reshaped my world and allowed me to travel to places I could only ever have dreamed of: Afghanistan, Laos, Komodo Island, Morocco, Costa Rica, Peru, Vietnam and Mexico to name just a few".

"I have vivid memories of National Geographic and its influence on my childhood. From the magazine I used to gaze as a young boy and would collect at every opportunity, to the signature music at the start of each documentary that made me run from whatever I was doing to sit glued to the television in awe." "I am a very privileged person to work for National Geographic. To have my childhood dream come true in the way it has? I can't ask for much more".

Synopsis:

During conflict in Afghanistan Hayden Turner uncovers the battle to save the animals in the Kabul Zoo. Animals like Marjan the Lion and Donatella the Asiatic Bear suffered horrific mistreatment in Afghanistan's war. The Film documents the story of Kabul Zoo, once a proud institution, which has been devastated during the last 20 years of the civil war in Afghanistan. More than 300 of the Zoo’s animals have been killed in the fighting. The remaining animals were desperately in need of attention as their cramped cages and untreated wounds made conditions intolerable.

In 1995 the Zoo itself had become the frontline and bullets and bombs added to the misery of its inhabitants. When the Taliban finally seized control they attempted to close down the Zoo but it was reprieved after references to the Prophet keeping a menagerie were cited in the Koran. The star of the Zoo, Marjan the Lion, perhaps the Worlds most famous caged carnivore, died during the making of the film. After 25 years of suffering, including surviving a revenge grenade attack after his partner ate a foolhardy Mujahadeen who had jumped into their enclosure, Marjan finally gave up his struggle.

The Zoo mission culminated in the move of European Wolves and an Asiatic Bear from cramped cages into new open enclosures and with the promise of $500,000 from the American Zoo Federation and the promise of replacement Lions from various donors, the future of the Zoo is again looking bright.

Synopsis:

Ten years ago, Australian Zookeeper Hayden Turner hand-reared a young Camel into adulthood. Hayden and the Camel became friends for life. Ever since, Hayden has been gripped by a passionate desire to find out everything there is to know about Camels. Now, he is about to embark on the ultimate Camel Adventure and fulfil a long cherished dream to journey the desert with a caravan of Camels.

Starting in the foothills of the lower Atlas Mountains of Morocco, Hayden will travel along an ancient Saharan trade route. But first, he must find a team to take him into the desert. Mekki, a local guide, introduces him to experienced Camel drivers Leho and Beso, who have been travelling these trade routes since childhood. Leho and Beso are Berbers, or Imazighen in their native language, a name meaning the free people.

With sixteen characterful Camels, these men will journey through an area of Morocco rarely visited by outsiders. The caravan will travel for ten days across some of the harshest terrain in the World. Along the way Hayden will learn about the way of life of the Imazighen Nomads, everything from their method of baking bread to the songs they sing at night. He discovers that the desert, so seemingly harsh and intimidating, is, on the contrary, a provider to the Nomads.

This is also Hayden's big chance to study the Camels close up, to see how their bodies adapt and change with conditions in the desert; to observe how they form relationships with each other and with humans; to discover how and why the people of the desert have come to depend on them for survival. This is also his chance for a bit of Camel bonding. On their long nights together under the Saharan stars, Hayden and his Camel team spend time getting to know each other. At the end of the journey, the caravan will get to relax and party Moroccan style at a traditional wedding.
