Hayden Turner - Private Safaris

A journey into Africa with Hayden Turner Private Safaris is a life-changing experience. While there is adventure and luxury aplenty, the safaris also frequently bring deeply-emotional experiences, lasting friendships, and a new outlook on life.

Each day was a delight, whether it was the stunning scenery, magnificent animals or the fantastic food, wine and lodgings. Every day dawned with the knowledge that something amazing would be seen, felt, heard or done and often delighted further as Hayden conjured up surprises for us all throughout the journey.

This could be a stop to sit under a leaden sky overlooking the endless vista of African Savannah with an unexpected bottle of bubbly produced with a bowl of freshly made popcorn.

Or our own chef to cook us a gourmet feast seated in the luxurious dining room of the Queen Elizabeth Cottage in the Queen Elizabeth National Park. Heaven! These little 'HT touches' as we came to call them were the hallmark of an incredibly thoughtful, intuitive guide.

Hayden imparted his knowledge to us with professionalism and flair but was also attuned to the group's biorhythmic fluctuations, letting us have our private time as well as joining us for many a merry evening with a bottle or two of South African chardonnay or pinot noir. At the end of our extraordinary Ugandan odyssey, we were sad to say goodbye to Hayden, our driver Steffie and all the background staff and team who made our time in Uganda one we will treasure forever.

We were – and are – so impressed with what Hayden delivered for us in Uganda, we have booked another safari in Namibia for May 2010. We can’t wait!

If you are looking for a one-off, unique safari, Hayden Turner Private Safaris will deliver your dream. We can vouch for it!

The two weeks I spent on safari with Hayden Turner Private Safaris were among the most memorable and enjoyable of my life. Fifty percent of that enjoyment was where we were in Africa: the things we saw and experienced. But the other 50 percent was Hayden and the way he so professionally and passionately undertook his task as tour leader and guide.

The major thing I learned from Hayden – apart from his incredible knowledge on animas, the environment and nature – was the respect he showed every human being with whom we came into contact. Hayden always had this attitude of respect and friendship, no matter what the position in life, colour or creed of that person.

The world would be a far better place if we all treated our fellow men with only half the respect Hayden does. For this and other reasons I hope Hayden continues with activities that will allow him the opportunity to influence other people with his unique attributes.

I have the dream that we may do another safari with Hayden in the future. I have certainly recommended him to many who asked about our travels.

We will never forget our privileged one-on-one contact on a forest walk with the orphaned chimpanzees on Ngamba Island, an incredible experience with our closest living relations.

So profound and intimate, words cannot convey the enormity of that encounter.

Our first sighting of the famed tree-climbing lions – an extraordinary sight – their grace and power enabling them to inhabit such an unnatural home.

How could we ever forget the unique and rare occurrence of observing a buffalo giving birth, humbling us all into awed reverence with the natural, dignified ease of this emergence of life in nature’s nursery.

But nothing prepared us for our first glimpse of the magnificent mountain gorilla.

Our first sighting was a juvenile male serenely munching his way through his daily vegetarian meal.

Meeting the silver-back gorillas, awesome in their magnificence with their trusting, watchful stare, we felt the three-hour trek to view such splendid beasts was worth every single (at times arduous) step.

We had a tremendous time from the minute we landed to the last meal at Lake Victoria.

While Uganda can take some of the credit, Hayden’s company and hospitality were the main reasons for us having such a good time.

What seems amazing is that so many of the experiences seem so vivid in our memories, even weeks later.

Whether we are talking about Debbie carrying Nakuu on Ngamba Island, watching young gorillas play-fighting in Bwindi, helping Debbie get those lion photos at Isasha, or drinking the best gin-and-tonics in the world as the sun went down at Mweya.

Any single one of those would have been the highlight of any other trip.

We both hope our paths will cross with Hayden again in the future, in Uganda or elsewhere!

We had wanted to go to Uganda for many years, primarily to see the gorillas in the mountain region of the Bwindi Forest but also to visit a part of Africa we had never seen.

We wanted something out of the ordinary: unique, bespoke and preferably not in the company of strangers. Hayden not only ticked all the boxes with our requests, he exceeded our expectations in every aspect of the safari experience.

Hayden Turner Private Safaris had been recommended to us by friends who had waxed lyrical about his personal, bespoke service and tailor-made safari.

This greatly appealed to us. As discerning travelers, we were not keen to experienced such a highly-anticipated journey with the type of safari advertised by most tour operators and travel agents.

On meeting Hayden, he delivered a flawless presentation that answered all our questions and heightened our anticipation of our safari with him.

This immaculate attention to detail continued, with Hayden regularly keeping in contact and advising us of any updates or information we needed to be prepared for the safari, like vaccines and inoculations.

When we arrived at Entebbe Airport, we were personally met at the doors of our airplane by Hayden’s clearing agents who smilingly whisked us quickly and efficiently through Customs and Immigration, a feat not lost on us.

We were met by Hayden in the Arrivals Hall and he introduced us to our charming driver and co-guide, Steffie.

Steffie was to drive us the length and breadth of Uganda with an effortless, serene efficiency. He was a fount of information on the people, places, fauna and flora of this beautiful country.

From the day we arrived at Ngamba Island (ferried by boat and crossing the Equator on water!) to the end of our stay at the beautifully appointed accommodation in the Bwindi Forest, every day was a delight.
